Fans Desperate for Hockey, Company Desperate for Sales

Last month I made my annual purchase of EA Sports’s latest hockey game, NHL 2005. I noticed that it had been priced aggressively. It was only CAN $49.99 on the PC, which seemed to be about ten bucks less than NHL 2004 was. This is no doubt in response to the NHL lockout. No hockey means less gamers interested in hockey games.

As Kotaku reports, EA made a clever PR move by simulating the entire 2004-05 season, and then publicizing the results. In what can only be a sentimental move by the simulator, Calgary beat Montreal to take the cup. Clearly something’s corrupt, though, because Vancouver didn’t even make the playoffs. I also see that the Rangers’ Andrew Raycroft won the Vezina despite his team not making the playoffs. How often does that happen?

  1. It’s good to see that even in the simulated world the Leafs will lose painfully. Their model must be right after all.
