Icelanders Apparently Hot To Trot

Durex has released its 2004 Global Sex Survey. I wouldn’t place much faith in their methodology, but it’s still an entertaining read. What are the big conclusions?

  • Iceland is where the action is. They lead the globe in age of first sexual experience and vibrator ownership, and are in the top ten for several other categories.
  • If you’re a randy teenager, you better hope you don’t live in Vietnam. They place last for first experience (averaging nearly 20 years old, four years old than those loose Icelanders), are very low on the sexual indulgence chart and have the fewest sexual partners.
  • Here’s a bizarre pheonomenon if the stats are actually accurate. While the Japanese rank third in the number of sexual partners, they rank dead last in frequency of sex (about a third of those pesky French–no wonder the Americans don’t like them).

I’m not sure you can draw any profound inferences about human nature from this survey, but it’ll distract you for, oh, four to seven minutes. There’s also a PDF version.

  1. Maclean’s magazine (I think) does a Canadian sexual survey on a fairly regulary basis. Newfie’s always place first in frequency – woohoo!

    /proud Newfoundlander, b’ye

  2. Iceland ALSO has the lowest teen pregnancy rate in the developed world. Correlation doesn’t prove causation, but I suspect that a healthy attitude towards sex and hence towards birth control are contributing factors.

  3. ‘nee: that goes along well with the fact that kids who vow to abstain from sex have the same rate of STD’s as those who don’t. Sure, the kids who are having sex are having more sex, but they’re also much more prepared than the kid who swore they’d never do it until they found themselves in bed with that oh-so-cute, but diseased friend… and no protection. Whoops!

I’m sure abstinence is nice and all (never tried it myself) but planning ahead is better regardless. 🙂

  4. Masters & Johnson’s seminal research study on American sex habits revealed that people were sexually active in the 40s…but in a Bill Clinton sort of way, as opposed to an Icelander sort of way. So it makes me wonder how many people are emulating Clinton at a young age but still checking 17 as age of first experience?

  5. I really enjoyed this page. I will be linking and I will be trying to read and research all that there is to offer from this site! Visit my sites, please:
