Back in summer, Richard wrote an interesting post about the shortcomings of social networking sites like Meetup and Upcoming. He pointed out that I managed to organize a couple blogger meetups (details on the next one here) without relying on these sites. He shared my displeasure that Meetup is too regularized–it presumed that all humans want to meet once a month, on the same day.
Apparently, as found in Waxy’s link blog, Meetup has loosened these restrictions. Unfortunately, I can’t find any details on the Meetup site (or elsewhere on the Web) describing the details of these changes. It might behoove Meetup to, you know, inform its users of these changes. Maybe they sent an email that got spam-blocked?
UPDATE: As you’ll see in the comments, Dervala writes to point out the location of Meetup’s new features. I have apparently been spared the deluge of emails on these improvements by my spam filter (or, perhaps, my frontal lobe filter). I’m still a tad confused about why the regular Meetup page doesn’t advertise the new features–are they in beta?
while it’s not designed for recurring meetings, I’m very fond of evite for this sort of thing. I’ve been using it for all of my gatherings for the last few years, and it hasn’t disappointed me yet. 🙂
Hi Mr Barefoot,
Since I now pay the rent working for Meetup, I have to tell you that we did indeed send out an embarrassing number of emails about this improvement, announcing that you can now meet where, when, and how often you want. I’m almost relieved your spam filter saved your from the deluge.

Hope you’re keeping well, and that I’ll catch a Vancouver Bloggers’ meetup/Meetup one of these days.
