Via the Unofficial Apple Weblog, I read that Yahoo has purchased MusicMatch for $160 million, joining the increasingly-busy downloadable music space. This is great news for MusicMatch, who have toiled in the music player space for years. I never cared for their application (nor, for that matter, do I particularly like Winamp), but I’d say they have a decent user base.
I’m not so sure, however, about Yahoo’s wisdom in getting into this space. They are rather late to the online music party, what with, oh, Apple, Microsoft, AOL, Real and a thousand startups in the sector already. None of them are making money hand over fist, and I wonder if even Apple has broken even on their investment.
Winamp is the one program from 1997 that I still use daily. It has become a little bloated but it’s still a greatlittle app which I’m now so accustomed to that it’s unlikely I will switch anytime soon.
How about others? What’s the preferred mp3 player?

When I bought my first iPod, I converted to iTunes and haven’t looked back. Great design, big UI (a complaint I had about MusicMatch and Winamp–I know I could skin it with a bigger UI, but I can’t be bothered) and excellent feature set.
I’ve been using Foobar2000 for about a year now. It’s much smaller than Winamp, offers far more functionality and has some really superb plugins (they have one for your iPod).
The thing I LIKE about winamp is the small UI – just big enough that you leave it opan and on the screen to control, with plenty of real estate for the rest of the apps.
Here is another question…your FIRST ipod?
Have you replaced that already – and if so – is it due to that battery problem?
