I was channel-surfing over lunch, and was amused to note that all three movies on what I commonly refer to as our “crappy movie channels” were all shot in Vancouver. They’re hardly cinematic masterpieces, but it’s interesting to note just how much film work has come to Vancouver in the past 20 years:
- Frankie Muniz is saving a baby in a runaway car on Chesterfield Avenue in North Van.
- Marc Blucas is shooting pool with Laura Regan in SOHO Cafe and Billiards.
- Sarah Polley is busy dying on Commercial Drive.
That raises an interesting question–what’s the best (or, say, critically-acclaimed) movie ever to be shot in BC? An IMDB query (eliminating straight-to-video, TV shows and TV movies) returned 619 results. After a quick scan of the top-rated films, I’d go with Gods and Monsters (though how much of it was shot in Vancouver?), Best in Show or Insomnia. I really dig Roxanne (one of the earliest major films shot in BC, in lovely Nelson), but I expect the critics liked Insomnia best.
I did not know that Best in Show was filmed here. That’s amusing. That would be my vote for the best movie shot in Vancouver.
“best in show” is definitely my BC favourite.
13th warrior…just kidding. A majority of that movie was actually shot in Campbell River, BC.
“Little Women”, the version with Susan Sarandon and Winona Ryder.
Eh, I really want to see that list. I think there have been some really great works done lately, but I can’t say which one I like best until I see the list.
I liked Chronicles of Riddick – nice and flashy.
I’ll vote for Roxanne.
anything but insomnia — christ, that movie sucked.
How about X-Men 2? That was a decent flick. Not mind-boggling, but fun. Best in Show was funny as hell. The Butterfly Effect was also pretty good … and I didn’t know it was filmed in Vancouver until just now. Dang, I wish I’d noticed that when I was watching it. I’m dumb. 🙂
hah! Part of the Butterfly Effect was filmed at the Blarney Stone. How did I not recognize that?
“The Accused” was a longish time ago (1988), but Jodie Foster got a Best Actress Oscar for it, so some people would include it.
There’s always “Catwoman.” Hee hee.
x2 baby!
Roxanne gets my vote, McCabe and Mrs. Miller (going back a few years) gets my wife’s.
Cousins,” with Ted Danson and Isabella Rossellini
