I’ve been meaning to plug Jill (in an entirely platonic fashion) for a while. She makes amazing cakes. Currently, she has three diverse jobs, so the cake thing is kind of a side bar. As such, she doesn’t have a website yet Her site is www.theuncommoncake.com (thanks, Lindsay). She is, however, very busy–she delivered four wedding cakes last weekend.
As you may know, the wedding cake business is kind of grey-market. Most cake bakers can’t afford the absurd requirements to officially be designated a FoodSafe, etc, kitchen. Jill gets all of her business through word of mouth, so here’s the good word.
Jill made the excellent cake for Julie and I’s birthday, and after the jump you can see her latest creation, a cake for Julie’s grandfather’s 80th birthday party. Yes, that’s a timeline. Yes, that’s a hammer and sickle. Not only are they cool, but they’re very tasty. Let me know, should you have any cake requirements, and I’ll hook you up.

I’d vote for the birthday cake Jill did for you and Julie as the best I’ve ever tasted. She has a website now, and your birthday cake is on it 🙂

just came across your blog and wanted to say hi
I’m quite intrigued, what did your *grandfather* do with computers? I don’t think of grampas and computer careers as going together very often!
If I’m interpreting the cake correctly I will probably be impressed, hope I’m not being too nosey!
how cute are the flip flop (not to be mistaken for thong) cookies? i love those!
Jo: Well, he was an early adopter of computers, and knows more about them than many people a quarter of his age. He wasn’t a engineer or anything, but still uses a computer every day.
