Uncertainty and the Dog Days of August

I attend August movies with more trepidation than any other month. Why? Because, as this article highlights (possible decaying URL), August is Hollywood’s dumping ground:

This weekend, Alien vs. Predator opens against Yu-Gi-Oh!. On Aug. 20, fans of new releases will choose between Exorcist: The Beginning and a Seth Green comedy called Without A Paddle. On Aug. 27, your choices will be a little more difficult. Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid will open with Benji: Off the Leash and an oft-delayed serial killer film starring Ben Kingsley, Suspect Zero.

Wall to wall winners there, eh? The article goes on to point out that there’s no statistical argument for this approach–it’s strictly a Tinseltown tradition. Still, the promising Garden State and the well-reviewed Blair Witch Project with Sharks…er…Open Water also debut this month. In fact, they’re probably being released this month as darkhorses that may succeed with less competition.

  1. On August 20th, “Hero” is coming to Vancouver. That’s the one that I am waiting for. I think it looks like a beautiful film and I’ve been trying to see it for over a year.

  2. There are things to see this month, but yeah, the vast majority of them are smaller, if not idependents. Certainly not anything I’m expecting to crack the top 10.
