While writing about David Byrne, I went searching for an appropriate photo. Instead, I found this amusing page:
In Union School, in Unionville, Connecticut, USA, in Mrs. Robotham’s first grade class, on October 23, 1961, one student was absent. Six year old Jeff Fillian was about to get his tonsils removed and Mrs. Robotham decided to use it as an opportunity for her class to practice printing, letter writing, and art work.
It’s an entertaining set of occasionally bizarre illustrations. There’s also something slightly weird in the way that every child wrote the same message in their card. I suppose it was an educational exercise. I dig like the way Raymond just wrote “I hope you are feeling”, as if Jeff might have actually had a spinal injury.
The exact same thing happened to me when I was out of school thanks to a bicycle spoke injury. My grade 3 classmates all did up a bunch of cards. I thought they were the neatest thing ever.
My parents may still have them stored away somewhere…
