Albert Camus’s Soccer Career

Here’s a paraphrased tidbit I recently learned from Eduardo Galeano’s Soccer in Sun and Shadow:

Albert Camus played goalkeeper all his life because in that position your shoes don’t wear out quickly. As a child from a poor home, Camus’s grandmother would examine the soles of his shoes every night, and beat him if they were worn.

Man, that’s nasty. Of course, knowing that Camus played soccer immediately reminded me of this famous sketch.
