Further to Those Gaming Stats

Last week I questioned the veracity of a survey that suggested that 42% of gamers are female. I’m not budging on that, but I was interested to note this posting on Wonderland. It features photos of two female teams at the recent Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) Grand Finals. As Wonderland’s Alice points out, these photos “will do the gaming world many, many favours” because “they look so normal”.

  1. Have you considered the popularity of sites like Yahoo Games? According to this article in the Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/television/feature_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000507766), games like WordRacer are included in gaming stats. More than half of Sims players are women, accounting for about 20 million units (that’s about $500 million) a year. And then they buy all the add-ons for the Sims, which include Hot Date and other relationship-based apps. Also, when I go to Tinseltown, most of the Dance Dance Revolution players are teenage girls. They started out playing Pokemon on the Game Boy, IMHO.
