Warhol in Vancouver

About ten years, when I was doing my BFA at UVic, I came home one weekend and went to the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Without sounding too much like a fine arts student, it totally blew my mind. For the first time I was looking at art that seemed meaningful and resonant. I’d seen my fair share of the Old Masters (and sundry other old guys’ paintings), but Warhol’s work felt so utterly modern by comparison. A few other artists have inspired similar responses–my favourites are Henri Rousseau (in particular, The Dream) and Rebecca Horn.

The Vancouver Art Gallery is showing another Warhol exhibit. Actually, it may be the same one–they don’t say. I highly recommend it. In particular, I’d suggest it to those who maybe don’t go to a lot of galleries because they find the art stuffy, irrelevant or pretentious. You might find something in Warhol that you haven’t seen before.

  1. The VAG issued a >news release on the Warhol exhibit. It suggests this exhibition includes more drawings and illustrations than the 1995 tour did.

However, the description still sounds very similar to what I saw in 1995. I think Warhol would be amused to learn that galleries were applying his replication techniques to exhibitions. Art for the masses made art for the masses. 😉
