Do You Live in BC and Have Broadband Access?

If so, go to this page and click the Start button to test your connection speed. Don’t use the Web or check email while the test is going on. Once it finishes, come back here and report what service you’re using (Telus, Shaw, etc), where you’re located and what up/down speeds you got.

My local ISP claims to provide a connection ‘8-15 times faster than cable or ADSL’. I’m not buying it, but I need a data set to offer a meaningful complaint. So, if you’ve got a minute, test your connection and report back.

UPDATE: Thanks to everybody who has provided their stats. That’ll be plenty. My current speed is shamefully slow–190 kbps down and about 100 kbps up. So, despite what Donna says about Novus (see comments), there’s either something wrong with my connection or with their service.

I’m using Shaw, and I’m currently in Vernon. I won’t have a chance to try this from the lower mainland until I’m back at home on Sunday.

  3. Telus. Commercial Drive. 1251 down, 535 up.

That said, my experience with Novus was (most of the time) easily 8-10 times that. I loved Novus. I miss Novus.

Of course, I don’t miss how frequently they went down… but when they were up, they made my insides feel funny. In a good way.

Is anyone on the Fido broadband test here in Richmond yet?

  7. What a shame! I’d really have them look into it.. I lived at Georgia and Bute for quite some time and their connection speeds were ***VERY*** impressive.

  8. For anacronyms: home speed is 1760/423.

For everyone else: that’s Shaw in Aldergrove.

  9. I’d say you’re being shafted. That ain’t fast enough. My speeds when I lived in Yaletown were *much* better than that… :/

In fact, that was one of the biggest drawbacks to leaving Yaletown and I *loved* that part of town. Good god, I’m a dork. 🙂

  10. The new docsis service that Shaw just launched in Van is probably by far the fastest option available. It costs around $10/month more than regular highspeed

Your upload speed : 311187 bps, or 303 kbps.

  12. 1186 down and 459 up on Shaw – False Creek South Shore. It’s impressive I suppose but at work I can do aroung 7000 down and 4500 up. A 1 Gig fibre line back to the UBC backbone has some advantages. 🙂
