From that tome of insightful cinema criticism, Premiere magazine, we find a list of the 100 greatest movie characters of all time. Like the greatest Canadian, this is deeply subjective, but what criteria could put Jeff Spicoli at #9 and Darth Vader at #84?

Ace Ventura is on that list.
Ye-flipping-gods.
I was utterly floored to see Jeff Spicoli come so elevated on that list. Sean Penn owns my heart with this role.
A very, in my honest opinion, disapointing list.
Firstly, I’ll let my personal tastes get involved, and let myself be annoyed at the fact that my favorite movie character of all time, Spacey’s Verbal Kint, was only at Number 100, highered by such cinema shiteness as Jack Freaking Sparrow.
Secondly, some ommisions definitely raise eyebrows. Where is Han Solo? Arguably the best character in Star Wars and clearly the best hero. Michael Corleone? A character who’s progression and an actor’s who’s performance clearly betters the Number 1 choice of Brando’s Vito Corleone. Heck, one could even argue that De Niro’s performance as the same character betters Brando’s.
Also, Gollum’s inclusion so high up the list is a little bit suspect. Could this basically just be Premiere’s way of flipping the bird at the Acadamy? There snubbing of Serkis was stupid, but I think that has been used for leiverage in placing a good-to-great character in the top 10. Controversial? Yes. Correct? No.
I personally think that list is pretty crappy…how on earth can you put Vito at #1 and not put Michael at least int he top 5. Michael is quite arguably better in many ways than Vito. Pierce Brosnan’s Thomas Crowne and Han Solo were other characters I was dissapointed to not see on the list. I think that a lot of the characters on this list are not very good character and many more were high up on the list than they should have been…
