My friend Matthew Bissett and I were watching the final game of the Vancouver Canucks regular season. That’s unremarkable in iitself, except that my wife remarked that:
Without question, you two are the only hockey fans in the country watching this game and discussing the continuing influence of postmodernism on Canadian opera.
While this is undoubtedly true, we were pleased to see Vancouver win the division for the first time in a decade and avoid playing the savvy and venerable Dallas Stars in the first round.
OK… somehow I know Matthew… Does Matthew know why I know him? I’m trying to put my finger on it… Wait… ask him if he has weird memories of follow spots and a musical homage to trains in Canada….
Yep, that’d be it. I remember that cheesy show–what the heck was it called? I can’t get passed “Merrily We Roll Along”, which didn’t feature any trains.
Ah, it was called “All Aboard”.
What a pretentious entry! Who gives a f.uck that you’re discussing the continuing influence of postmodernism on Canadian opera while watching rugby? You’re what I’d call a pseudointellectual.
A little humility goes a long way, buddy!
Dear Dawn,
First off, it was hockey, not rugby.
Secondly, how did you conclude that that I’m a pseudo-intellectual and not a)an actual intellectual or b)not an intellectual at all? What are the sure-fire indicators of my pseudo-intellectualism?
Lastly, I’ll thank you for not swearing on my site. You’ll find that I don’t swear here, so you can do me and those who read it the same courtesy.
Regardless, the nice thing about this site, like any media publication, is that if you don’t like it, you don’t have to read it. There are plenty of other weblogs on my sidebar that you might enjoy more.
In a way – Dawn’s comment is hilarious for being so vicious, hostile, and reactionary.
And the rugby part is classic.
I think two guys discussing any aspect of Opera during hockey is definitely ‘blog worthy’.
Dawn, dear, you just don’t get it.
Some people do not give a F***, this is true. But those people generally do not spend time surfing through blogs.
Maybe you should be one of them.
(First – and this has been bugging me all day… – I forgot to say please in my first comment 😉 )
Yes! that was it – All Aboard. I got to see every, single, freaking show as “Spot 2.” If I remember correctly, Matthew was up there somewhere as well. This was after we spent months making the blackest set known to theatre-kind.
Speaking of black and a small reference to pots and kettles… You handled that well, Darren; I’d say way better than any pseudointellectual…
