It’s late, and I’m still working. Suddenly, I’m thinking of an episode of Perfect Strangers, in which Balki starts mass-producing bibi-bobkas, a Myposian pastry treat. The episode plays out like a variation of Job Switching, an episode of I Love Lucy (I have a deep, inexplicable loathing for this show) where Lucy and her sidekick try working in a candy factory. Of course, the political subtext of that episode is that women are better off in the home, and shouldn’t be trying to enter the workforce. And probably shouldn’t be voting, either.
Does anybody else remember the exploding bibi-bobkas? Can you believe that Perfect Strangers ran for eight years?
I remember that (ridiculous) episode of “I Love Lucy” and I remember “Perfect Strangers” running for a lot of years, but I don’t remember the bibi-bobkas episode. I hated Balki.
i remeber the bibi bobkas!!! i cant believe that show ran for 8 years!! where is Balki now i wonder???
I remember that episode. There was a great alliterative phrase that Balki’s roommate (just forgot the character’s name) stumbled over, as I recall.
PERFECT STRANGERS was a great show. People make fun of it to this day, but they still remember it. Very theatrical. Not a surprise, given Mark Lynn Baker’s background. They even brought in Ernie Sabella for one season, before he became better known as that guy with Nathan Lane in THE LION KING.
It was a nice mix of verbal humor with physical schtick. I’d love to see this one on DVD.
I remember a later episode in which they were being very protective of a very valuable bottle of wine, to the point where they were walking around their apartment on pillows to prevent anything from falling and breaking. Those two had great comedic timing and great physical presence.
Balki has gone back and forth from theater to failed sit-coms. Baker has stuck to theater. The two were doing two separate shows in NYC a couple years back and nearly had a reunion, but not quite.
Ernie Sabella’s character’s name was Mr. Twinkisetti. I can’t believe I still remember that…
I’ll go hide in shame now.
That’s my favorite ep.
Remember, if you don’t make it right, the bibi in the bupka will go boom.
Perfect Strangers was art…Balki is Mypos’ finest export for sure. The thing that tripped me out was the lack of an upper lip on ‘Cousin Larry’
When you roll the dough,
Make sure you roll it slow,
‘Cause if you roll the dough too quick,
bibi-bobka make you sick.
I somehow have the feeling that my neurons occupied with remembering the bibi-bobka work song over all these years could have been put to better use.
I love this episode! I just can’t remember all the words to the song. Can anyone help me out? This is what I have so far….. (I know this is sad, but its become one of those things I need to put to rest!)
“When you rolling out the dough,
Just make sure you roll it slow.
If you roll it out too quick,
Bibi Bopkas make you sick.
When you put the filling in,
Just make sure you wear a grin,
???????
Bibi Bopkas turn out swell!
What’s the second last line?? Pls help!
Cheers,
Charlie
The 2nd to the last line goes something like:
When you smilin’ when you bake,
Then, Bibi Bopkas turn out swell. The joke is that you would think they say ‘great’ and they say ‘swell’. Why I remember this is beyond me!

When you smile on what you bake
