Today’s link round-up started being all about childish things. Then it degerated to being vaguely related to adolescent things. Then it truly went south:
- Top
eleven mail-in action figures. In my youth, I sent away all my proofs of
purchase (proof of purchi?) for a
Star Wars action figure. I can’t remember if it was Greedo or Boba Fett.
Given their relative popularity, it was probably Greedo–Monsieur Fett was
no doubt available in stores. - Spare a thought (and some change) for the
lowly arcade owner. - Bup bu ba ba baaaaa….Dartmouth is apparently the
birthplace of the frozen game (thanks, Mirabilis). - It’s your portable media centre/PDA/phone/Blackberry/toe cleaner all
in one. And it fits in your (cargo) pants pocket. And it’s a
pile of pants. - Win
Conan’s sword. Really.
I can’t believe I remember this, but I sent away for Boba Fett, as he wasn’t available until the Empire Strikes Back line of toys. Greedo was around for the first movie and he was the toy who’d always be in stock as everybody’d buy all the other toys instead…him and Hammerhead. It was weird having Boba Fett before you fully knew how cool he was bound to be.
I had the Anakin Skywalker toy too. Didn’t even come with a lightsaber if I remember correctly.
From what I recall, Boba Fett, Greedo & Hammerhead were all mail-ins before they were available in stores.
Boba Fett was the big deal because he was highlighted in the Christmas Special (that awful Wookie Christmas that’s often denied official recognition). Also, if you were one of the lucky few who sent in for Boba Fett early on, you got the shooting plastic dart from his pack (they hadn’t yet decided it was a rocket pack), which they discontinued, probably because it was a choking hazard.
Was a little wee obsessed with Star Wars growing up in the 70’s.
