The Grammys were on in the other room tonight, so I got to hear much of them. What is wrong with pop music these days? Was there a single performance that wasn’t melody-free and dull? Did a single song have a message besides ‘love is good’ or ‘heartbreak is bad’? Man, I’ll take Chumbawamba over this dreck any day. Nobody does bubblegum pop like the Europeans (and Kylie Minogue, I suppose).
Could it be that the music industry is suffering and CD sales down because today’s pop music sucks?
I should note that I am not espousing Chumbawamba or Ms. Minogue as exceptional artists–just that they’re way more fun and entertaining than anything I heard tonight.
UPDATE: I just heard Earth, Wind and Fire, George Clinton and Outkast (which of these is not like the others), so I must partially retract my former statement. They brought the funk, kicked its ass and threw it back.
Yeah, it indeed *did* kik ass. Even Samuel L.’s introductions were cool.
*applauds* Pop music these days sucks. Some of the crap that passes for “melody” these days is less melodic than the rambling tunes I used to make up to keep myself company while I was locked out of the house as a latchkey kid (forgot the damn keys again). And that was BAD stuff.
Kylie rocks!! 😛
Kids today with their rock ‘n roll…
Back when I was a kid etc. etc. 🙂
I’m 46 and remember how much music *really* sucked in the 70’s – escapist hippies turned to Disco, insipid Pop (You light Up My Life, come on!) and Dinosaur bands like Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis, etc… ruled the airwaves, while fresh Punk and “new wave” music -the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash, Joy Division, and later, California hardcore punk were shut out.
The record companies blamed blank cassettes and home taping of albums, etc… blah, blah…they never blame themselves.
We’re in the same predicament today.
Bad taste, bandwagon jumping and beating a dead horse…
