Fake Movie Fan Sites

A quick note on fake movie sites. Movie studios, in an effort to foster an online, ‘grass roots’ following for their movies, regularly make fake movie fan sites. In searching for Timeline’s official site, I discovered that this site was first in the search results. It is, in my opinion, unquestionably a fake.

Why? First, though it’s been built to look kind of hokey, the site is totally error free. There are no typographical or design errors. Furthermore, there only seems to be totally positive news about the film. Also, there is no ‘About’ information about the author or the background of the site. Making a Web site is an egotisical thing (I oughta know), and people want to talk about who’s behind them–themselves. Finally, at the bottom of the page, the site is copyrighted to one ‘Peter Broadway’. Seems like an inside joke to me.

  1. add the fact that the webmaster’s email address is “qa@” instead of “geek@” or something similar, and i’ll agree with you on that one. plus, he seems to have an AWFUL lot of inside info without linking to *any* external sites.

  2. Funny how his screen captures are so crisp and clear, come in a surprising array of sizes and are taken directly from the cinema screen complete with copyright information.

The guy who owns the domain leaves a pretty big footprint behind and he’s easy to google. Just because he’s a serious geek, doesn’t mean he’s not in the employ of a studio.

  3. The following time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as significantly as this 1. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I truly thought youd have something fascinating to say. All I hear is really a bunch of whining about 1 thing which you may fix ought to you werent too busy looking for attention.
