An important factor will be the DRM software that ships with the players. For a player to support WMA it must license the DRM from M$. I doubt Apple will choose to follow that route.
The author of the article is way off the mark with the comment that Apple fans would buy the iPod regardless of how good it is. The iPod’s quality coupled with the Apple brand is the reason it sells so well.
