Scooterific

I was kind of interested in the Segway, but, frankly, those things are so last year. In twenty years we’ll be watching a retrospective design show about the 90s and waxing nostalgic about those things.

However, Gizmodo recently linked to an article about the Equinox, a more traditional electric scooter. I think we should sell our car and pick up a couple of these badboys (a deeply inappropriate label, if there ever was one). They’re only US $2800, can be recharged in a regular outlet and have a range of about 70 kms on a single charge. Nifty.

  1. scooter, schmooter.

motorcycle all the way. vroom. 🙂

note: I think that people should require additional driver training to ride a scooter. just because they’re slower than motorcyles doesn’t make the training that you get for motorcycles any less sufficient. 80% of the training I got was at low speeds. the entire first “road” test (after your learners) that you take to get your class 6 in BC is in the parking lot with cones and such.

To get your class 6, it goes:
    – Learners, written test at driver services. Allows you to ride within view of a class 6 licensed adult, under 60kph, during the day, no passengers, no freeway.
    – MSA (Motorcycle Skills Assessment), parking lot test, can be done by certified instructors. Removes all restrictions, except riding at night and passengers.
    – Class 6, hour long road test followed by driver services, mostly suburban riding, with a short stint on the freeway. Removes remaining restrictions.

The only part of the tests & training that doesn’t apply to riding scooters is riding on the freeway. So why can you ride a vehicle under 49cc’s on a regular license?

    bah, I say. bah.

  2. Thank you for linking to that article. It really was interesting. I had a chance to ride a Segway this summer – at place near Granville Island rents them and I dragged my girlfriend there as soon as we were in town, because I wanted to try them so badly.

They are fun, but not worth the cost.

  3. Thanks for providing such a great post, it was excellent and extremely informative. It is my initial time that I visit here. I discovered a great deal of informative stuff within your write-up. Keep it up. Thank you.
